GRB afterglows: from ultra-relativistic to non-relativistic phase

چکیده

Postburst evolution of adiabatic fireballs that produce γ-ray bursts is studied. Emphasis has been put on the transition from the highly relativistic phase to the non-relativistic phase, which, according to our calculation, should happen much earlier than previously expected. The theoretical light curves decline a little sharper at the nonrelativistic stage than at early times, but still can fit the observations well. However, disagreements are obvious when t ≥ 100 d, implying a large initial energy E0, a low interstellar density n, or the possible existence of a persistent energy source at the center of the fireball.

Whether gamma-ray bursts are highly beamed or not is a very difficult but important problem that we are confronted with. Some theorists suggest that beaming effect usually leads to a sharp break in the afterglow light curve during the ultra-relativistic phase, with the breaking point determined by γ = 1/θ 0 , where γ is the Lorentz factor of the blastwave and θ 0 is the initial half opening ang...

GRB afterglows in the deep Newtonian phase

In many GRBs, afterglows have been observed for months or even years. It deserves noting that at such late stages, the remnants should have entered the deep Newtonian phase, during which the majority of shock-accelerated electrons will no longer be highly relativistic. However, a small portion of electrons are still ultra-relativistic and capable of emitting synchrotron radiation. Under the ass...

Ultra-Relativistic Blast Wave: Stability and Strong Non-Universality

Linear eigenmodes of a spherically symmetrical ultra-relativistic blast wave (the Blandford-McKee, BMK, solution) are calculated. The BMK solution is shown to be stable and strongly non-universal. It is stable because all the eigenmodes decay. Nonuniversality of the BMK solution (BMK is not an intermediate asymptotic) is a consequence of causality. In terms of eigenmodes – some eigenmodes decay...

Gamma-Ray Burst Afterglows with Energy Injection: Homogeneous versus Wind External Media

Assuming an adiabatic evolution of a gamma-ray burst (hereafter GRB) fireball interacting with an external medium, we calculate the hydrodynamics of the fireball with energy injection from a strongly magnetic millisecond pulsar through magnetic dipole radiation, and we obtain the light curve of the optical afterglow from the fireball by synchrotron radiation. Results are given both for a homoge...
